How an Ancient Natural Remedy Can Defend Against Biological Terrorism

On August 17, 1999 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued its final rule establishing that all over-the-counter (OTC) drug products containing colloidal silver ingredients or silver salts for internal or external use are not generally recognized as safe and effective and are misbranded. The FDA went on to say that it issued this ruling because many colloidal silver products are being marketed for numerous serious disease conditions and the FDA is not "aware of any substantial scientific evidence that supports the use of OTC colloidal silver ingredients or silver salts for these disease conditions." In one sense, we strongly support the FDA ruling. That is because we have seen, like the FDA, colloidal silver preparations of unknown formulation and of dubious quality appear in retail outlets and on the Internet with representations that the products can cure a wide range of disease conditions, many of which are quite serious. Silver is clearly a powerful weapon against biological infection (more on this later). But, as we noted in The Doctors' Prescription for Healthy Living (4.12:16-17), the quality of commercial and homemade colloidal silver preparations is often simply not acceptable. Some products, as the FDA has suggested, could potentially expose consumers to higher than necessary amounts of silver; while others, as our research has shown, may be partially or completely infective against bacterial strains, due to particle size, lack of a positive charge or use of additives that physically interfere with the silver particles. We believe that before any manufacturer makes disease-curing claims for its product that the company should be able to substantiate the likelihood that their product can fulfill these claims. But with this caveat in mind, we now have enough current and reputable findings to cast doubt on the overly broad nature of the FDA warning. Some extremely fascinating research on colloidal silver has been published recently which should serve to broaden the debate about its uses in health and medicine, especially in light of the possibility of threats of biological terrorism and emergence of ever more strains of antibiotic-resistant pathogens in the United States and abroad.
The Biological Weapons Threat Use of colloidal silver by ordinary citizens (who are unlikely to receive anthrax-specific antibiotics) is clearly justified in the case of biological terrorism with anthrax spores, and it is probably a good idea to have a quality preparation in the medicine cabinet. The basis for our assertion stems from news reports on domestic terrorism; the work of two investigative journalists in a recently published book focused on what they term the secret war against the Jews; and reports from scientific publications. We have previously reported on large stockpiles of biological weapons in the former Soviet empire and evidence that terrorists, both domestic and foreign, could launch an attack from within our borders. White supremacists or persons in sympathy with despots such as Saddam Hussein could carry out such an attack. It is most likely that urban areas would be targeted with releases of anthrax, plague, or designer bacteria. It has been said that anthrax is a favorite weapon of Hussein. According to journalist Nicholas Horrock, "The U.S. Office of Technology Assessment once estimated that a small private plane, with 220 pounds of anthrax spores, flying over Washington on a clear, windless night, could trail an invisible, odorless mist that would kill between 1 million and 3 million people."
Saddam Hussein vs. Colloidal Silver In this context, we also report on the work of John Loftus and Mark Aarons. It is the beginning of our understanding as to why colloidal silver is important - and why we should not simply turn our backs on it as allegedly useless as the FDA is wont to ask us to do. Loftus is a consultant to CBS's 60 Minutes and ABC's Prime Time and a former prosecutor with the U.S. Justice Department's Nazi-hunting unit with excellent access to top-secret CIA and NATO archives. Aarons is an internationally recognized award-winning investigative journalist. Together, they authored the extremely well documented non-fiction work, The Secret War Against the Jews (St. Martin's Press, 1994). According to Loftus and Aarons, building on Nazi human experimentation, by the 1950's the Soviets had developed huge stockpiles of anthrax, plague, and designer bacteria as both a defensive shield and for offensive weapons. Based on documents collected under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act, Loftus and Aarons report on the development of a potent protector against biological poisons called Movidyn within the Czechoslovakian satellite. "Movidyn," they write, "is a form of colloidal silver, odorless, tasteless, and cheaper to produce than chlorine disinfectants." Only one part per billion of powdered Movidyn in water had a germicidal effect. "In a study of infected wells, it completely destroyed typhus, malaria, cholera, and amoebic dysentery. Drinking containers washed in Movidyn retained their germ-fighting abilities for several weeks." Not only was Movidyn a cost-effective prophylactic for most of the waterborne diseases that infect the Third World. "To the astonishment of the Soviet military, Movidyn also disinfected every germ warfare bacteria in the Soviet arsenal, even their newest designed poisons. In other words, Movidyn was too good." Because of its threat to Soviet supremacy in the area of germ warfare, the authors report, the entire Czech factory was disassembled and removed to the Soviet Union. "To this day, the Movidyn formula seems to have been suppressed from the world...." This is not the only report to mention that colloidal silver is effective against anthrax. Dr. H. Bechold reports in Colloids in Biology and Medicine that colloidal silver is effective against anthrax.
Lack of Anthrax-specific Antidote for General Population Do not kid yourself. When it comes to government planners and terrorism attacks, we ordinary citizens are relatively unimportant. Although some antibiotics are effective against anthrax and new anti-anthrax vaccines are under development, supplies will be relegated to first-response personnel such as select government officials, military and police personnel, and first-line health professionals. The general population will be considered non-essential. We will be left to die horrible deaths.

The Doctors' Prescription It seems smart to have both penicillin (which is effective against anthrax) and a quality colloidal silver preparation in the home medicine cabinet (especially in light of silver's many medical uses). In the case of terrorist attacks with anthrax, penicillin, colloidal silver or both used together could save your life. According to The Silver Bullet Health Report, a newsletter, the most effective method of delivery of colloidal silver preparations in the case of biological terrorist attacks, especially airborne anthrax spores, would be to inhale a fine mist through the nostrils.* It is recommended in The Silver Bullet Health Report that persons interested in availing themselves of protection with colloidal silver in the case of an anthrax attack purchase "little plastic nasal spray bottles such as those you can find filled with saline solution at just about any local pharmacy, usually selling for under a dollar a bottle...all you have to do is carefully pry off the nozzle from the little spray bottle, empty its contents and rinse it out, and then fill the bottle about half way with fresh, pure colloidal silver. Then, just push the spray nozzle back into place onto the bottle. By filling the bottle only halfway, you get a beautiful aerosol mist of colloidal silver when you squeeze the sides of the plastic bottle.... Researchers tell us that filling these little nasal spray bottles with colloidal silver at the time of a germ warfare attack on U.S. cities, and then spraying the fine colloidal silver aerosol mist up into each nostril while simultaneously inhaling deeply through the nose should bring enough colloidal silver into the lungs to kill any pathogens that may have lodged there if you happened to have been caught outside during the initial hours of an attack." This is important information. In the case of terrorist attack, you may want to consider inhaling colloidal silver through your nostrils from 10 to 15 times a day. Since anthrax would be disseminated via air-borne aerosol spores that would lodge in the lungs, it is important to make sure that you quench any infections and colonization there first before they can be transferred into the bloodstream.
*Unfortunately, at this time, although we know that colloidal silver is effective against a wide range of biological pathogens, we have no direct evidence that it would be effective against botulism or the plague, two additional commonly manufactured biological terrorist weapons. However, as the Aarons-Loftus work suggests, colloidal silver may be protective against a wide range of biological terrorist weapons.
Bactericidal Action of Movidyn

I" 4 CEMBER 1949, samples of Movidyn, a colloidal silver preparation, became available in experimental lots for bactericidal
evaluation in this laboratory. This product consisted
of finely dispersed colloidal silver, stabilized by the addition of a
protective agent such as gelatin to prevent recoagulation. It
has been prepared commercially in Czechoslovakia and is now
commercially available in this country. The tests reported here
were made on laboratory sample Lot No. 227-B prepared in this
laboratory by the Czechoslovakian developer of this product,
Zdenek Moudry. The laboratory lot contained in suspension
about 5% by weight of silver (expressed as silver nitrate). The
commercial product (marketed by United States Movidyn
Corp., 863 North Orleans St., Chicago 10, Ill.) may differ somewhat
from this laboratory preparation since it is to be made in
larger volume lots, and the exact nature of the colloidal particles
may not be precisely the same.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
The test organisms employed for the work reported here were
Escherichia coli strain B, Serratia marcescens, Salmonella typhosa,
Micrococcus pyogenes vw. aureus 209 and Bacillus globigii spores.
With the exception of B. globigii spores, these organisms were
carried on nutrient agar slants. For each experiment, transfers
were made to nutrient broth, and after an 18- to 24-hour culture

period at 37' C., they were centrifuged, washed twice with distilled
water, and resuspended in distilled water. The B. globigii
spores used as the test organisms had been harvested, washed,
and suspended in distilled water 3 months before use. The spore
suspension had been heat shocked for 30 minutes at 60" C. to
destroy any vegetative cells before using. In all cases, suspensions
of the test organisms were prepared with 10,000 to 40,000
organisms per ml.
All dilutions of Movidyn referred to in this paper were the
actual dilutions made from the liquid sample 227-B. Dilutions
are reported rather than concentrations, as is customary with
bacteriological data. This sample of Movidyn contained about
5% by weight of silver (expressed as silver nitrate) so the actual
dilution of silver (as silver nitrate) in the samples was twenty
times greater than the Movidyn dilutions reported. A diagrammatic
scheme of the dilution procedure is shown below.
Only three dilutions were made in order to obtain any one of the
test concentrations of Movidyn. It was necessary to limit the
number of dilutions made to reach the desired concentrations
since there was a loss of silver in each dilution prepared, because
of deposition on the walls of the container. Autoclaved tap
