The world on the brink of the Abyss
The world is on the brink of an abyss, a global health threat so great that it threatens modern society and the human species. The abyss is bird flu. The next pandemic could start at any moment.
When it starts, the world's most deadly virus, H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza, will race around the planet within days. As many as 80% of those infected may die.
Some expect that when the pandemic starts, everything else will stop. Everything we take for granted, public services, public utilities, gas, electricity, the food distribution system, emergency services, the healthcare system. Those who survive the virus may die in the chaos and violence that follows.
This website presents an alternative viewpoint on the treatment of bird flu. Some doctors and scientists believe that pharmaceutical drugs and vaccines are not the answer to treating bird flu. Linus Pauling, Ph.D. - The only person in history to win two unshared Nobel Prizes, Dr. Pauling has been included in a list of the 20 greatest scientists of all time, with Albert Einstein being the only other scientist from the twentieth century on the list. It is difficult to determine which is more effective against bird flu: intravenous hydrogen peroxide or intravenous vitamin C. A clinical study comparing both, along with the antiviral drug Tamiflu, against H5N1 bird flu may provide information that would, if acted upon, save millions of lives during the pandemic.
Overall, there are fewer clinical references supporting the use of intravenous hydrogen peroxide. However, while intravenous vitamin C appears to be effective against influenza and other viral illnesses, some evidence suggests that intravenous hydrogen peroxide can dramatically reduce the mortality rate of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). It is possible that an ideal protocol would combine both. While vitamin C is an antioxidant and hydrogen peroxide is an oxidant, recent studies show that these compounds work collaboratively: intravenous vitamin C increases hydrogen peroxide levels in the body. In 2005, research by the National Institutes of Health showed that intravenous vitamin C was effective in killing cancer cells by delivering hydrogen peroxide to the tissues. The authors noted: "These findings give plausibility to intravenous ascorbic acid in cancer treatment, and have unexpected implications for treatment of infections where H2O2 may be beneficial." [21]
Evaluation Criteria for Treatments
Treatments are evaluated according to the following criteria:

Is affordable to the poorest people in developing countries
Is available or easily produced in quantities necessary to treat world's population

Evidence supporting the use of intravenous hydrogen peroxide against bird flu
One of the most remarkable articles to appear in a medical journal is the article entitled "Influenza Pneumonia: The Intravenous Injection of Hydrogen Peroxide," which appeared in the respected British medical journal The Lancet. [11]
The article is remarkable for several reasons.
First, it is the only reference in the medical literature that amounts to a clinical trial using human subjects infected with a highly pathogenic bird flu virus. While there are many references to promising influenza treatments in the medical literature, nearly all cite mouse-model or in vitro (test tube) experiments rather than human subjects.
Second, it is exceptional because doctors attempted to treat dying patients with a new and experimental agent, a common household chemical, rather than an approved pharmaceutical drug.
Third, it is exceptional because the treatment seemed to produce remarkable recoveries in a majority of patients infected with a deadly bird flu virus.
Fourth, it is exceptional because the treatment seemed effective despite being administered late in the stage of the illness. This is significant because established influenza treatments such as antiviral drugs must be administered early - within the first 48 hours of infection - to have any impact on the course of the disease.
Fifth, it is exceptional because the deadly "Spanish flu" virus, presumably the same virus that is described in The Lancet article, is genetically similar to the H5N1 bird flu virus that is causing great concern around the globe. [12]
This would make the treatment published in The Lancet even more relevant because if these two viruses are genetically similar, a treatment capable of stopping the deadly bird flu virus described in the article may have a high probability of stopping bird flu.
Harrowing circumstances
The Lancet article describes the kind of harrowing circumstances doctors around the world may soon face when the bird flu pandemic strikes: a ward full of patients so ill they are either comatose or delirious; patients in such agony they have to be restrained in their beds.
The death rate from this particular influenza virus was approximately 80%, roughly equivalent to the death rate associated with the H5N1 bird flu virus. Many of the patients were in the last stages of the illness.
"So useless were the usual remedies... that we felt justified in giving a trial to any method which held out a prospect of success," the doctors wrote.
Unfettered by the legal liabilities that would have made such an experiment unthinkable today, the doctors took 2 ounces of a hydrogen peroxide, mixed it with 8 ounces of normal saline solution, and administered the experimental solution intravenously to the worst case in their ward of dying patients.
First patient shows a remarkable recovery
"The first case... [had] broncho-pneumonia of influenzal origin and was intensely toxaemic. He had been delirious for two days previously, and was selected as being the worst case in the ward and to all appearances moribund..." wrote the doctors.
Within 6 hours of administration, the man who had been dying and so delirious he had to be tied to his bed, sat up and asked for food. Almost immediately his fever of 101.8 fell to normal. The patient's improvement in condition was remarkable, if not miraculous.
Encouraged by this recovery, the doctors tried the treatment on another 24 of their sickest patients in the ward.
Ultimately, more than half of the dying patients showed immediate improvements and survived.
The vitals signs of the patients were carefully monitored. Those receiving the hydrogen peroxide infusions showed a rapid reduction in fever and improved mental, cardiovascular, and respiratory function. No serious side effects were reported.
Not only did the treatment appear to be effective, but it was effective in treating dying patients in the final stages of the illness, a feat no modern antiviral drug can match.
Foundation for a new therapy
While obscure and largely forgotten, the article in The Lancet became one of the foundations for a new, unapproved medical therapy. Some physicians took notice and began to try intravenous hydrogen peroxide therapy in their practices. Attention! Since 1920, doctors have administered intravenous hydrogen peroxide to treat a wide range of afflictions including influenza, chronic pain, influenza, cancer, diabetes, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and arthritis. The use of hydrogen peroxide has been the subject of hundreds of articles in the scientific medical literature, as well as books with titles like Hydrogen Peroxide - Medical Miracle [22] and Flood your Body with Oxygen. [23] A search on Google for the keyword combination "hydrogen peroxide" and "influenza" yields 319,000 results.
Some patients swear by the therapy, claiming it has cured or improved conditions that drugs and orthodox treatments did not help.
Physicians cite effectiveness against flu and other viral diseases
While there have been no large-scale clinical trials of hydrogen peroxide against influenza, other physicians have corroborated the results published in The Lancet.
One of these physicians is William Campbell Douglass, M.D., author of the book Hydrogen Peroxide: Medical Miracle. In his book Douglass related cases of flu treated with hydrogen peroxide:
"A 67-year-old man came to the Farr Clinic complaining of fever, chills, sore throat, cough, and aching in the bones for 12 hours; a typical case of viremia, the flu, or, in popular parlance, the crud. He was placed on an H2O2 drip. His temperature was 102 at the beginning of the treatment. The next day his temperature was down to 101, and another treatment was given. Before the infusion was finished, his temperature had returned to normal and he was completely free of symptoms. The following day he returned to work and remained well.
One of my patients... was scheduled to go to Dallas in two days for an assignment. She came in with red eyes, a runny red nose, and a fever of 101... She was started on a peroxide drip and given 10mg of Coenzyme Q10 by mouth to help the oxygen delivery. The next morning she was 90% well, and the following morning, the day for departure to Dallas, she was completely well."
Douglas reported that he had seen many similar cases of flu resolve rapidly with hydrogen peroxide therapy. "We could relate many similar 'flu stories,' but it would be monotonous reading: first day sick, second day 90% well, and third day back to normal. I have never seen anything like it," he wrote. [24]
A closer look at hydrogen peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is widely known as a household disinfectant, a mouthwash or cleaner for light skin wounds. It is not FDA-approved for internal use. Here are some facts about hydrogen peroxide that are not widely known:
Hydrogen peroxide is present or produced by almost every cell in the human body [25] [26]
Hydrogen peroxide is used by the immune system as a first line of defense against viruses, bacteria, and other invaders
Hydrogen peroxide has been proven to kill a wide range of viruses, including the influenza virus [27]
Hydrogen peroxide is produced by the "good bacteria" in the human gut to prevent the proliferation of invading bacteria and yeast infections
Hydrogen peroxide, when injected, stimulates the body's enzyme systems and causes the human metabolic rate to increase 100%
Hydrogen peroxide, when injected, increases oxygen levels in the body to levels as high as those achieved with a hyperbaric oxygen chamber
This last fact is particularly important, because all viruses, including the bird flu virus, are anaerobic. Anaerobic viruses are unique in that they cannot live in the presence of oxygen.
The British physicians who used hydrogen peroxide to treat patients dying from lethal influenza noted this fact. In fact, they hypothesized that hydrogen peroxide administered intravenously might not only supply critically needed oxygen but destroy the circulating virus and toxins by oxidation in much same the way that the body's own natural defense system does.
Based on the positive outcome of the treatment, the doctor's hypothesis may be correct.
Critics of hydrogen peroxide therapy
Powerful organizations, including some of the largest mass media organizations, have attacked intravenous hydrogen peroxide therapy.
Without citing scientific references, The American Cancer Society (ACS) alleges that "Hydrogen peroxide injections can have dangerous side effects. High blood levels of hydrogen peroxide can create oxygen bubbles that block blood flow and cause gangrene and death. Destruction of blood cells has also been reported after intravenous injection of hydrogen peroxide." Without citing cases, the ACS further alleges that "The medical literature contains several accounts of patient deaths attributed directly to oxygen therapy." [28]
Proponents of the therapy refute these allegations:
Hydrogen peroxide is present or produced by almost every cell in the human body, and is key factor in the immune system. It therefore cannot possibly be intrinsically toxic to the human body. [25] [26]
When intravenously administered into the body, hydrogen peroxide breaks down into two non-toxic components, water and oxygen.
Nobody disputes that high levels of hydrogen peroxide can be dangerous; Proponents of hydrogen peroxide therapy note that 35% hydrogen peroxide can burn the skin and is dangerous to ingest, while 90% hydrogen peroxide has been used as rocket fuel. However, the solution used in intravenous hydrogen peroxide therapy is highly dilute, typically 0.0375 to 0.1% hydrogen peroxide.
There have been no large-scale clinical studies conducted that show that intravenous hydrogen peroxide is, in fact, dangerous. While no one can claim it is a proven medical treatment, the converse is also true.
While there have been cases where families or patients have tried to collect money by filing lawsuits alleging harm from the treatment, there is no published clinical evidence to support these claims.
Some observers also allege that some of the most vocal critics of hydrogen peroxide therapy have a vested interest in suppressing the therapy. For example, in the case of the American Cancer Society, they allege that:
A large proportion of ACS revenues come from large pharmaceutical and cancer industry companies, companies whose profits would be threatened should an inexpensive, unpatentable treatment like intravenous hydrogen peroxide prove effective. [29]
the ACS board of directors includes corporate executives from the pharmaceutical companies, companies whose profits would be threatened by inexpensive, non-drug treatments [30] [29]
ACS regularly conducts highly publicized attacks against treatments that could potentially compete with expensive cancer drugs, a $12 billion dollar industry. [29] [31]
ACS has a history of opposing regulations against products and chemicals that were suspected of causing cancer. [29] [32]
Possible side effects of hydrogen peroxide therapy
Scientists and doctors have noted some side effects and risks associated with hydrogen peroxide therapy.
In one case reported in the British Medical Journal, a man developed an embolism after doctors pumped 3% hydrogen peroxide into a wound in his side. The patient recovered, and experts' note in the case of hydrogen peroxide, an embolus is pure oxygen, which normally dissolves into the tissues. A pure oxygen embolus should not be confused with an air embolus, which consists of primarily nitrogen, does not dissolve, and is indeed dangerous. [33] The case in question was not an intravenous treatment, and the solution used is 80 times more powerful than would be used in an intravenous treatment (3% versus 0.0375%). The embolus that developed was oxygen, not nitrogen, and therefore not life-threatening. However, opponents of the therapy often cite this case, saying it proves that hydrogen peroxide therapy can cause dangerous embolisms.
Yale Medical School investigators reported three cases of ulcerative colitis following the administration of hydrogen peroxide enemas (not intravenous treatments), but went on to conclude that peroxide enemas were safe if the concentration of the solution was carefully controlled. [34]
CBS News, The New York Times, and other media sources report that a patient in South Carolina bled to dead five days after receiving an intravenous hydrogen peroxide treatment from her doctor, Dr. James Shortt. Soon afterwards, armed State, County, and Federal agents raided Dr. Shortt's clinic, and reporters published inflammatory headlines like "Prescription for death" and accused the doctor of "injecting rocket fuel" into the patient. [35] The New York Times cited unnamed medical experts that claimed that there is no scientific evidence to suggest that hydrogen peroxide is an effective treatment. It quoted another presumed medical expert who had not heard of the treatment but labeled it "very, very dangerous." [36] The CBS News article, without citing sources, alleged that "If you search the medical literature, you won't find any rigorous scientific studies showing this treatment works. You will, however, find a number of cases in which hydrogen peroxide, used internally, caused fatal embolisms and blood disorders." [37] Ironically, the coroner's report noted that the victim was taking two drugs, Tegretol and Copaxone, prescribed by a different physician, that have side effects that include bruising, infection, bleeding, thrombosis, and liver damage, the exact symptoms found to be the cause of death in the case. [38] Consumer advocate Tim Bolen reported that the media organizations covering the story conducted "no research of their own to determine the validity of the story... Although we provided over thirty highly qualified scientists and doctors to be interviewed - even offering to fly them to New York ... [they also] ignored the fact that over a million recorded intravenous Hydrogen Peroxide treatments have been administered worldwide. Jim Shortt, on camera, in front of Anderson Cooper said 'Anderson, even if this treatment DID cause this woman to die, and it didn't, one death in a million treatments would make Hydrogen Peroxide therapy the SAFEST treatment in the history of medicine,' " but this was excluded from the coverage. [39] William Campbell Douglass II, M.D. and author of Hydrogen Peroxide - Medical Miracle, wrote "For decades, I've been a staunch advocate of intravenous hydrogen peroxide... I've used the therapy myself hundreds of times to save countless lives in Africa and other locales. It really is miraculous... The idea that an injection of diluted hydrogen peroxide caused the death of anyone five days after administration is a joke..." [40] R.J. Rowen, M.D., President of the International Oxidative Medicine Association wrote a statement that there was no possible way the half-teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide in a single treatment could have been responsible for the symptoms exhibited by the patient. Ultimately the doctor was cleared of any wrongdoing. However, this case is still cited by opponents of hydrogen peroxide therapy as evidence that the treatment is dangerous and potentially fatal.
Doctors report the most common side effect of intravenous hydrogen peroxide to be inflammation of the vein in which the infusion is given. Factors that determine the likelihood of inflammation include the concentration of the solution, the speed of administration, the size of the vein, the temperature of the solution, and the amount of solution administered. Why isn't intravenous hydrogen peroxide already in use?
If intravenous hydrogen peroxide shows promise against a critical public health threat like bird flu, why aren't government, doctors, and pharmaceutical companies investigating this treatment or comparing it against antiviral drugs like Tamiflu?
It's important to clarify that hydrogen peroxide therapy, while largely unknown in North America, it is widely used in some countries, including Germany, Russia and even Cuba, where the therapy is an accepted part of mainstream medical practice. [42]
In other countries, there are forces at work that prevent hydrogen peroxide from being brought to a wider population. Some allege that because hydrogen peroxide is so inexpensive and cannot be patented, the treatment is not only unprofitable when compared to patented drugs, but a threat to the profits of the pharmaceutical industry.
"There [are] three very powerful forces fighting the general acceptance of [hydrogen peroxide]. First, the drug industry. H2O2 is not patentable. The drug industry would lose billions in lost drug sales. Second, the FDA [who] works in collusion with the drug industry. They can be counted on to pull every dirty trick imaginable to stop this therapy... The third force is organized medicine. In the face of these momentous experimental results, you would think that doctors would be clamoring for more information... but it doesn't work that way. With most doctors, it's not greed, but pride, ignorance, and bigotry that account for their resistance to new and unusual treatments." - William Campbell Douglass, M.D.
"A major reason for [the] lack of interest in bio-oxidative therapies is that ozone and hydrogen peroxide are non-patentable substances that are very inexpensive to manufacture and use. In Germany, Russia and Cuba, physicians have successfully treated many serious and chronic conditions (including cancer and heart disease) without expensive surgery. The net cost of the materials for a treatment of autohemotherapy or a medical infusion of hydrogen peroxide is under $10... bio-oxidative therapies administered in a medical setting cost up to fifty percent less than traditional therapies, especially for patients suffering from chronic and degenerative diseases. Self-administered treatments by patients themselves... can cost far less. Writing about hydrogen peroxide therapy, Waves Forest asks rhetorically "...what would happen if a cure was discovered that was completely effective against the vast majority of diseases, ridiculously cheap and plentiful, and in most cases could be self-administered without a physician? Would the current medical establishment welcome a breakthrough that could render 98 per cent of all drugs, testing and disease-related surgery obsolete? What would the response be of the pharmaceutical industrialists, hospital chain owners, health insurance moguls, AMA, and FDA? Would you expect to read or hear such an announcement from any medical journal or media outlet owned by people financially committed to the medical status quo, which is practically all of them? How many want to help their own occupation become unnecessary? ...This is precisely the situation that exists, and the cure has indeed been around for ages. It has been independently reported effective against virtually every disease at one time or another, in thousands of public-domain medical articles, which had never been collected and correlated until recently." [43]
According to one doctor, there are many reasons why the medical establishment does not embrace natural therapies:
"Physicians receive no education in medical school about the merits of natural treatments. Medical meetings and medical journals are heavily subsidized by the pharmaceutical industry so no information about the virtues of natural treatments will be brought forth in these arenas. Review articles about diseases will either omit information about natural therapies or the material about natural treatments will be presented in such a biased or negative way that no physician would want to use it.
Most physicians believe that the only valid therapies are pharmaceutical and everything else is a scam. I was in this camp for more than 30 years.
Powerful governmental agencies exist to protect the earnings of the pharmaceutical industry and are not very interested in the health status of the general populace. Money wins out so dangerous therapies are released on the public without any attempt to prove safety (genetically modified foods, irradiation of food, fluoridation of water, vaccines etc.).
Tax free foundations supposedly concerned about public health set up research studies to disprove the value of natural therapies which is easy to do by using impotent products, stopping the study before sufficient time has elapsed, and using statistics to skew the results. Unfortunately, some research scientists are just like accountants and lawyers and their services can be bought. When these unfavorable results come forth they are widely disseminated on television and other media by skilled public relations experts to convince the public there is no value in the substances they are using. The key to unraveling the truth about these sordid pieces of research lies in discovering whose funds set up the foundation (aluminum, tobacco, agribusiness etc.).
Physicians who decide to try natural substances are forced to learn new skills, which is not easy.
Inertia can be a strong influence... Human nature tends to oppose change so medical advances often take 50 or more years until they are implemented.
...alternative medical practitioners have been badly harassed by governmental authorities... forcing them to leave the country or defend themselves in expensive lawsuits to avoid losing their licenses. A leader in natural health, Dr. Jonathan Wright, had his office ransacked by Gestapo-like federal agents who seized all his patient records.
There is a legal concept that is widely appreciated by physicians as a way to avoid lawsuits. This concept is you are at risk if you are using treatments that your colleagues are not using. Naturally this impedes change!

Public trust in the system
Most people trust in the government and the public health care authorities to address public health issues. They rely on the media, their doctor, and the government to take care of them and keep them informed. As a result, the clinical evidence supporting the use of hydrogen peroxide in treating bird flu will likely continue to remain hidden to all but the few who take the initiative to do their own research.
In an article on hydrogen peroxide, Ron Kennedy, M.D. writes: "Those who refuse to educate themselves, never read, never try anything out of the mainstream of thought and insist on thoughtlessly following the "expert's advice," will pay through the nose for therapies which drain their resources and deliver half-baked results. It may be there is a segment of the population which is capable of nothing more. God bless those folks. Here is this doctor's advice: think for yourself." [45]
